ASSIGNMENT 2 : PROBLEM SOLUTION - MONSOON SEASON IN MALAYSIA

Generally monsoon is the changing in wind direction which can be from southwest and northeast. The climate in Malaysia mostly influence by southwest and northeast monsoon. This monsoon usually bearing heavy rain that brought by winds  said Ir. Chia Chong Wing, Deputy Director, Bahagian Saliran dan Tebatan Banjir. A study state that southwest monsoon has huge effect in influencing patterns of rainfall in the western part of peninsula Malaysia especially Northwest region (Jamaludin et. al, 2010). So, we could tell that monsoon brought some problem but, there will always solution for each hindrance.
One of problem that could occur on monsoon is flood. In Malaysia, floods can be said as natural event that occur annually causing damage to properties and loss of life (Ngai, 1997). Even though floods occur annually, but it become severe as it coupled with other natural factor such as heavy rainfall on monsoon season (Ngai, 1997). Moreover, the continuous raining during the season make the situation getting harder as it increase the river runoff which lead to flood (Ang, 2015). For example, the flood that occur in Kelantan in late 2014, a study by Ang (2015) said that this is because Kelantan directly exposed of northeast monsoon and are the earliest area to receive a lot of heavy rain during that season.
However, monsoon floods can be prevented or reduced by several methods such as improving the drainage system (Ang, 2015). The drainage system is an essential part of living in a city or urban area, as it reduces flood damage by carrying water away (Melbourne Water).  But the question is how good the drainage systems can be? It has no doubt that our drainage system is poor as it is filled with too much trash that prevents water from flow in. The drainage systems will prevent water from flowing into resident houses.
To conclude, monsoon is natural season that occur annually which carry a lot of rain. Flood also is natural disaster that cannot be stopped but it always can be manage with systematic drainage systems other than people should know how to handle it.

Cause and Effect Outline

THE HAZE

Introduction
1.      Haze occurred when there are particles and sunlight encounters in the air.
2.      Haze was determined by Air Pollution Index (API) which can be retrieved hourly or daily data readings. (NSW Government, 13th November 2015)
3.      In this year, our country face a very big issue of haze which mostly coming from neighbor country, Indonesia and causing health problem and flight delay.
Body
1.      In Southeast, Indonesia is the biggest contributor to this problem due to high demand on the use of plantation for oil and burning the forest has been the easiest and quick way to clear the forest.
a)      It was said by a researcher from Center for International Forestry Research that by using fire to clear the forest is 10 times faster and cheaper rather than use of machine.
b)      Haze is occurring annually but it getting worsen with the presence of El Nino that brought drought.
2.      The biggest effect of haze is health problem.
a)      Haze release small particles of dangerous element such as sulfates that being carried by wind.
b)      The small particles can travel thousands miles from their origin and could ended anywhere they being brought.
c)      As human breathing every second, the small particles could also enter to our body and give bad effect to the lung.
d)      However, skin also can absorb the particles and causing skin cancer.
3.      Due to decrease in visibility, flight need to be delayed to avoid risks.
a)      Due to low visibility, about 29 flights were delayed or cancelled in Kuala Lumpur.
b)      Meanwhile in Singapore, it was reported that two private jets was diverted to Changi Airport also due to low visibility. (The Star, 15th September 2015)
Conclusion
1.      To be concluded, there are several effects from haze that can be seen clearly which is health problems and delayed in flight.
2.      However, even is the haze mainly from Indonesia, not only Indonesia are facing the same problem, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand also share the haze problem.
3.       So, some actions should be taken to handle this problem so that it would not causing more problems in the future.

HECTIC WEEK

This is the third weeks since we, UMTian students and Marine Biology second year start our new semester and it seem like we never stop walking around and working. Well it can be classified as walking actually. The whole three weeks is really hectic actually.
Well, for the whole three weeks, we mostly in the lab for almost everyday, analysis our sample that taken from Bidong Island months ago. Searching for zooplankton, phytoplankton, counting them one by one for each instrument we used. For an instance we used three instrument we used to collect those sample then we need to repeat the same routine over and over again. Sometime we just feel that we are eating plankton for our lunch. *sigh*. But somehow, we can consider it as a work for a student that soon to graduate. It somehow teach how we should do our work in the future. Now its hard but tomorrow it will be easy as we practiced it day by day. So, strongly we keep our faces up, no longer eyes on the ground. More sweet is we did it with smile, we have member all around. We all doing the same thing, not alone. Thats an important thing.
Due to tiredness all day, when we just come home and landed on the bed, we can fall asleep just like that. Tiredness teach us how to appreaciate a little time to rest. Even for a minute, time we got to rest is so valuable. Thanks to that, we can no longer wasting our time. Well, sometimes because when stress is controlling the mind, it need some entertaiment. So just watched some movies or drama. But it got dragged for some hours.
Enter the second year now made us realized that time is surely flow really fast. It just feel like yesterday we become UMT student and now we even have junior to take care for. Having junior too sometimes make us serious more. Like want to show the best thing about being a Marine Biology student. Here in our faculty, we were known for one big Marine Biologist student. So now we are big brothers and big sisters. Just keep it up! We are not alone
